Positively Ultra-Abled, with Shirley Cheng – Emotional Pro

January 31st, 2006

Shirley Cheng is a 22 year old woman who has experienced more physical, medical and emotional setbacks in her 22 years than most people experience in a lifetime of 80 or more years. Diagnosed with severe juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at age 1 year, Shirley recounts the impact of "positivity" on a life that has left her blind and confined to a wheelchair. She appears to tell us how this "positivity" has changed her life, enabling her to self-publish 3 books by age 20, in addition to winning literary prizes. Shirley Cheng’s is a story of devotion, hardship, reversals and triumph–not to be missed!

Segment 1: Who Is Shirley Cheng and Why Does She Seek Fame?
Shirley Cheng tells a short version of her life and reveals that her love of life motivates her to go for her life passions. She tells us she wants to empower, inspire, motivate and give support to others. And she’s hoping for eye surgery that can heal her so she can return to the visual arts, one of her loves. Shirley is on a mission to draw attention to some serious problems: parental rights in children’s medical care, and the mistreatment she experienced as a disabled student in public schools

Segment 2: Keys to Avoiding Emotional Upset
Shirley was taken from her mother at age 7 while a court battle ensued attempting to force Shirley into a series of operations. Shirley reports she felt fearful, but had faith that her mother would triumph. Find out why! She talks with Ilene about mutual sharing of emotions between parent and child, her dreams for becoming sighted again and how she is working to create them. Find out where Shirley’s "positivity" came from and how she supports it with daily gratitude.

Segment 3: What Shirley Does to Stay "Content with Being Me"
Despite the many difficulties facing her and her mother, Shirley remains "content," she claims. When Ilene asks her how she does this, she asserts it’s easy–and why. Shirley discusses her dream of attending Harvard University and how she goes about "creating my future". She says that Happiness is the only road she can choose, because it is the one that can move her forward to where she wants to go in life. Her motto is "Dancing [Happy] Heart Teaches True." "Your future is up to you," she challenges us!
